Key takeaways
- C$6 covers qualifying electronic activity, not every service completed online.
- Ten qualifying outgoing e-Transfers are included monthly; each additional transfer costs C$1.50.
- Assess cash deposits, specialist payments and merchant-processing costs separately.
What does the C$6 monthly fee include?
RBC Digital Choice works best as a low-cost account for a business whose routine banking is electronic. The C$6 monthly fee covers unlimited electronic debit and credit transactions, including online bill payments, pre-authorized payments and point-of-sale transactions. There is no minimum balance requirement, so you do not need to leave a large balance idle just to meet a package condition.
The important limitation is the word electronic. Cash deposits, certain payment services and wire transfers can attract standard fees even when initiated digitally. A business with hundreds of ordinary electronic transactions may fit the package better than a business making a smaller number of cash deposits or specialist payments. Transaction type matters more than the headline count.
| Activity | Package allowance | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Electronic debits and credits | Unlimited | The service must fall within the included electronic activity |
| Outgoing Interac e-Transfers | 10 monthly; C$1.50 each thereafter | Qualifying transfers use RBC Online Banking for business or RBC Edge |
| Mobile and ATM cheque deposits | Unlimited | Cheque deposits are not the same as cash deposits |
| Moneris deposits | Unlimited | Merchant-processing charges are a separate cost |
| Electronic account statements | No charge | Paper statements and other services need a separate fee check |
How much do extra e-Transfers cost?
RBC includes 10 qualifying outgoing Interac e-Transfers each month, then charges C$1.50 per additional transfer. This allowance is separate from the unlimited electronic debit and credit transactions. Treating all online payments as interchangeable would understate the cost of paying suppliers predominantly by e-Transfer.
For an illustrative month with 18 qualifying outgoing e-Transfers, eight transfers exceed the allowance. Eight multiplied by C$1.50 adds C$12 to the C$6 package fee, giving C$18 for those two charges alone. A month with 30 qualifying outgoing transfers adds C$30, producing C$36 before any other chargeable services. These examples exclude wire, cash-deposit and other fees; they are not complete account-cost estimates.
That makes payment frequency a useful screening question. A consultant paying a handful of subcontractors could stay within the allowance. A business paying many vendors every week should calculate the additional transfer charges before choosing the package. Compare the total cost of the payment mix, not simply the monthly account fee.
Which e-Transfer services are outside the allowance?
The included transfers must be sent through RBC Online Banking for business or RBC Edge. RBC excludes other Interac e-Transfer services from this package allowance, including Autodeposit, Request Money, Request Money Fulfillment and Bulk Interac e-Transfer. An excluded service is not automatically unavailable, but its pricing must be assessed separately.
This distinction matters for businesses collecting customer payments or processing payments in batches. Ten included outgoing transfers do not establish the cost of requesting money from customers or sending a bulk payment file. Before adopting a workflow, confirm the service, platform and applicable charge with RBC. A familiar Interac label does not make every feature part of the same allowance.
Are cash and paper deposits included?
RBC includes unlimited mobile and ATM cheque deposits. It also permits unlimited items deposited through specified channels, but the cost of processing a paper deposit still applies unless otherwise included. Deposited-item allowances and deposit-processing charges are different parts of the pricing structure.
Cash deposited at an RBC ATM is among the services subject to standard fees. Do not assume that using an ATM turns a cash deposit into an included electronic transaction. A shop that regularly deposits cash should compare its deposit volume and channels with the relevant fee schedule before deciding whether Digital Choice is economical.
For a digital-first service business, these restrictions may have little effect on an ordinary month. For a cash-taking retailer, they can be central to the account decision. Access to banking channels is useful, but access does not mean every use of those channels is covered by C$6.
Do unlimited Moneris deposits mean free card processing?
RBC includes unlimited Moneris deposits in Digital Choice. That can suit a merchant receiving settlements from Moneris, but it does not remove the separate charges associated with accepting customer card payments. The bank-account allowance and the merchant-processing arrangement need separate reviews.
Assess the two costs together without combining them into a misleading free-payments claim. Check the account charges for receiving deposits, then examine the processor's pricing and contractual terms for taking card payments. A deposit feature is valuable only when it fits the processor and settlement workflow your business actually uses.
How should you compare the real monthly cost?
Start with one representative month of business activity. Count qualifying outgoing e-Transfers, electronic bill payments, cash deposits, paper deposits and any wire or specialist payment services separately. If the business is seasonal, repeat the exercise for a busy month rather than relying only on a quiet period.
Use C$6 as the starting package fee. Add C$1.50 for each qualifying outgoing e-Transfer above ten, then obtain the applicable fees for the other chargeable services. RBC applies standard fees to services such as Pay Employees & Vendors and wire transfers that are not expressly included. A payroll or supplier-payment requirement therefore deserves its own check.
Compare alternative accounts using the same transaction mix. A higher package fee can be worthwhile if it covers services you use frequently; a lower advertised fee can become less attractive once extras are included. There is no universal cheapest account independent of how the business banks.
What is Treasi's verdict?
RBC Digital Choice is a credible option for a digital-first Canadian business that wants predictable basic banking costs without a minimum balance requirement. Its strongest feature is the combination of a C$6 monthly fee and unlimited qualifying electronic activity. The ten-transfer allowance adds value when outgoing e-Transfer use is modest.
It is less compelling as a default for frequent cash deposits, numerous outgoing e-Transfers or specialist payment workflows. Those businesses should price the extras before switching. Compare RBC with other business-banking options, review its provider profile for broader suitability, and request a quote for your requirements. A Treasi Score can also help connect this banking decision with your wider FX, payment and cash-management needs.
