EQ Bank Business Account: Who Can Apply?

EQ Bank’s Business Account supports registered sole proprietors and eligible active corporations, but it does not support every Canadian entity. Quebec residents and businesses are excluded. Before applying, check the applicant’s authority, ownership requirements and registration documents. This guide helps you identify eligibility gaps before choosing EQ for domestic business banking.

Key takeaways

  • Check registered status, location and applicant authority before choosing EQ Bank.
  • Unregistered sole proprietors and several other entity structures are not supported.
  • A complete application is not a guarantee of approval.

Is your business type supported?

EQ accepts registered sole proprietors and eligible active corporations. A freelancer’s occupation alone does not establish eligibility: the important distinction is whether the sole proprietorship is registered. An incorporated company must also satisfy EQ’s applicant and ownership conditions. Start with the legal entity rather than the trading name on your website.

The official application checklist says EQ does not currently support trusts, partnerships, charities, not-for-profit businesses, unregistered sole proprietors, or businesses owned by another business. A company with a holding-company owner should therefore check this exclusion before collecting documents. Do not assume that being incorporated removes the ownership restriction.

What must the person applying satisfy?

Applicants must be Canadian residents, meet their province’s age of majority, and have authority and power to bind the business when opening the account. EQ requires a Social Insurance Number, optional for incorporated businesses, and requires a Canadian mobile phone number for online signup.

For a corporation, EQ’s wording requires an active corporation and an applicant who is a majority shareholder, described on the page as more than 25%, a signing officer and a director. Use that exact provider test rather than interpreting a job title such as finance manager as sufficient authority. If your ownership arrangement is unclear, resolve it with EQ before applying.

What should you check before collecting documents?

These conditions are an application screen, not a promise that an account will be approved. Identity and business verification still apply. If a condition does not fit, compare an alternative whose documented eligibility covers your structure rather than trying to describe the business differently.

Which documents and records should be ready?

EQ’s checklist asks registered sole proprietors for the business registration number from the Certificate of Registration. For corporations, EQ requires the registration number from the Certificate of Incorporation, director information and tax information, including the CRA Program Account Number. The information must match recent filings.

Before entering an application, compare the business name, address, registration number and directors with the Business Registry. EQ identifies mismatches with registry information as a common application issue. Correcting official records first can prevent repeatedly submitting the same inconsistent details. This is a preparation step; it does not replace verification by the provider.

If you already have an EQ Personal Account, check that its phone number and other contact information are current. EQ says someone wanting both a Personal Account and Business Account should open the Personal Account first and use the same email for both. Keep that sequence separate from assumptions about universal personal-account requirements.

Does eligible mean operationally suitable?

Eligibility is only the first decision. EQ’s fees page permits one signing officer per Business Account and says only one individual per business may open accounts. A business that needs several people to authorize a payment should compare its internal controls with this setup before selecting the account.

Also check the currency and payment requirements. EQ’s Business Account is a domestic Canadian-dollar banking choice; an eligibility pass does not answer whether overseas collections or supplier payments need another service. Compare the account with the workflow you actually need, including payroll timing, outgoing transfer size and the number of payments made each month.

What is Treasi’s verdict and next step?

EQ is worth considering when your registered entity and authorized applicant meet the published requirements and a simple domestic account fits your business. It is not an appropriate default recommendation for Quebec businesses, excluded legal structures or ownership arrangements that conflict with the provider’s rules.

Use this guide as an application checklist, not another general account review. Read the full EQ review for fees and access trade-offs, compare business-banking options, and use the provider action below to discuss your requirements. A Treasi Score can place that account decision alongside your wider cash, FX, cards and payment needs.
